Dropwizard is one of the more widespread Java frameworks for creating micro and not-so-micro services easily. With its operations-friendly approach around application metrics and healthchecks, it is a great fit to be operated on top of Hashicorp Consul and Nomad. Consul acts as a distributed service registry and can also make direct use of Dropwizards healthchecks to report on service failures. Additionally, Consul K/V can be used to store and retrieve application configuration easily. Nomad - a scheduler and cluster manager - takes care of deploying, running and scaling the application and directly integrates with Consul for this purpose. All three of the above are used at Instana for offering its SaaS product. After a short introduction into the mentioned technologies the talk will jump right into a demo, showing a production like setup of Consul and Nomad and how to deploy, operate and upgrade a distributed application with it. To conclude, there will be an outlook on what further tooling can be utilized to make your operations even more enjoyable.
