We know big design upfront is a bad idea — we don't have all the information to design the system at the very start, requirements often change and customers want something now. No upfront design can be just as bad — the code can become tangled pretty quickly, and system qualities like scalability, security, latency, etc., can be very difficult, if not impossible, to retrofit.
