Extended Abstract
Surprisability has two faces: the first is our ability to grow from surprises, to rise strong from falling. This allows us to be daring and brave, and nurtures the second face: we surprise others. We predictably astonish markets, customers, partners and competitors.
Complexity is like a sea with waves. We can employ different strategies to deal with the waves: try staying out of their way to be safe and dry, surf them and nimbly jump on the next opportunity, or we can make them. This talk is about creating organisations that keep their competition awake at night while their people are enjoying making ever new waves.
Complex systems have three qualities that make predictive approaches not work:
- they are messy. We can never see/know all the details.
- they are situational. They can change more quickly than we can track it.
- they are contextual: Depending on our perspective the kind of "thing" we are looking at can change entirely.
These organisations need to grow five capabilities:
- Clarity of identity (we know who we are)
- Clarity of purpose (we know what we want)
- Clarity of reality (we know where we are and are not afraid to face what’s really going on)
- Courage in the face of uncertainty and ambiguity
- Agility - we want to challenge and improve the way we do things and experiment. We love learning.
I will explore these capabilities and give practical examples of how to grow our awareness and capacity as an organisation in each of them. There will be extensive room for interaction.
