Evolving Agile Organizations with Sociocracy 3.0

Even on the 15th anniversary of the agile manifesto, the clash of cultures between agile teams and traditional management lore remains largely unresolved. Existing approaches are either merely conceptual or rigid and monolithic (e.g. Holacracy). A new way is Sociocracy 3.0, a free and open-source framework for evolving agile organizations. It creates a pull-system for organizational change, and draws on a collection of independent, but mutually reinforcing patterns, so organizations can continuously adapt both pace and scope of a transition.

  • discover how an entire organization can be created out of agile teams, avoiding many of the challenges faced in organizations today

  • learn about Sociocracy 3.0 as an open framework of simple patterns which help an organization evolve towards greater agility

Extended Abstract:
Sociocracy 3.0 is a free and open-source framework for building and evolving agile teams and organizations:
It contains a coherent set of independent, but mutually reinforcing patterns applicable in different domains of an organization: collaboration, governance, organizational evolution, process improvement, and organizational structure. All patterns rely on a set of seven fundamental principles, to facilitate adaptation of a pattern to an organization's context.
Sociocracy 3.0 creates a pull system for organizational change: continuous improvement of work processes (and other policy) incrementally reveals more abstract impediments which can then be resolved by pulling in one or more new patterns. This makes Sociocracy 3.0 an evolutionary framework (rather than a revolutionary one, which has to be implemented as a whole, like Scrum, Holacracy, "classic" Sociocracy), significantly reducing the risk of breaking or slowing down an organization.
Most patterns contained in Sociocracy 3.0 have already been applied successfully in organizations around the globe for decades, they were compiled from many different sources, most notably the *Sociocratic Circle-organisation Method (SCM)* (incidentally, *Holacracy* is also a descendant of SCM), the *Toyota Production System (TPS)*/lean production, and *agile and lean software development*.
The design goals of Sociocracy 3.0 were

  • free: all materials, including those we create for trainings, are available under a Creative Commons Free Culture License
  • open: take what you need, do what you want with it, remix and adapt it
  • lightweight: everything is reduced to the essentials, you can easily add more complexity
  • effective: practices and concepts have been tested in the real world
  • actionable: there's specific patterns which can be implemented within the scope of a single team, or even, with a bit of imagination, just for one person.
