In order to build reliable systems you need the right test cases. Often there are thousands of test cases collected in a tool but no one can explicitly explain their particular value. Furthermore, if you automate the test execution and use the wrong test cases then you have just one thing: waste! So, how to discover, create, derive, and sustain reliable test cases? To answer that question this tutorial provides practical guidance to address challenges in the area of test case design.

In order to build reliable systems you need the right test cases. That means the test cases must be reliable as well to test the system in a systematic way as effective and efficient as possible. Often there are thousands of test cases collected in a tool (sometimes the name of this tool is Excel...) but no one can explicitly explain their particular value, why we really need all of them, and whether they are sufficient. Furthermore, if you automate the test execution and use the wrong test cases then you have just one thing: waste!
So, how to discover, create, derive, and sustain reliable test cases?
To answer that question this tutorial provides practical guidance to address challenges in the area of test case design: - How can we improve our practices to design better test cases? - What are the benefits, required preconditions and key principles? - Who are the involved stakeholders? - How can we create reliable test cases to test reliable systems as effective and efficient as possible?
Several test design methods (including combinatorial testing) will be explained in detail.
