The Internet of Things (IoT) promises to be the next inflection in computing and the internet. Companies, academics, and governments all over the world are investing heavily to make "connected everything" a reality. We're seeing an explosion of personal and industrial devices - many of which were traditionally "dumb" devices - becoming smart and connected in new ways resulting in a blending of cyber and physical worlds. This connectivity and flow of data promise to enable ambient intelligence in our everyday personal environments, as well as better understanding and real-time control of large and complex industrial systems. Projected benefits range from improved comfort and quality of life for individuals, better safety, and more sustainable use of energy and resources across the board. But we're just at the start of piecing together the IoT. What are some of the biggest challenges and opportunities, and what will it really take to realize the full benefits of the IoT? This talk will address some of these issues, as well as lay out a vision for what the IoT could become someday.
