Fail fast – how failing enables organizational learning in an uncertain environment

This is a fast paced workshop, where people work in pairs / small groups to:

  • * Build connections with other participants through sharing experiences about failing in organizations and the learning that occurred.
  • * Explore how to fail effectively to be able to learn efficiently.
  • * Build small things, which are essential for fast learning.
  • * Do strategic adjustments with a “Pivot” and explore what is essential to make a sound course correction.
  • * Work with simple tools like canvasses and boards.
  • * Conclude how failing enables organizational learning.

Target Audience: Decision makers and everyone involved in agile software development.
Prerequisites: Basic experience with agile software development is recommended.
Level: Practicing

You will learn:
Learn why failing is actually required regarding organizational learning.
Learn how to fail fast, early and cheap by applying some techniques like “MVP, “Pivot”, “Build-Measure-Learn”, “Validated Learning” from LeanStartup.

Extended abstract:
We use the 4-C structure of "Training from the back of the room"
1. Connections: Build connections with other participants by sharing experiences about failing & learning in organizations
Then we work in pairs/small groups in multiple short iterations to work through the next two stages:
2. Concepts: Very brief introduction of the next learning objective (related to "fail fast"
3. Concrete Practice: Hands-On practice in pairs/ small groups
4. Conclusions: Conclude with other participants what you learned about failing & learning in organizations and how you will apply it in your company / your future work.
